Profits from Poverty? (Midlands Bank version)
Reverse
Profits from Poverty? Artwork by Ralph Steadman.
In the 1970s, the world's leading banks lent over £187,000,000,000
to Latin America. Midland lent £5,300,000,000. The loans brought
profits for the banks and made rich elites richer. As always, hardly any
reached the poorest people.
But it's now the poor who are repaying the debt. Harsh economic poli-
cies, imposed at the insistence Of the banks, have cut living standards,
already desperately low, by as much as a half. 150 million women, men
and children live in absolute poverty. Hunger and disease are increas-
ing. Midland made £351 profits (before tax) in 1985. Only because the
poor kept paying.
