Profits from Poverty?
In the 1970s, the world's leading banks lent over £187.000,000,000
to Latin America. Nat West lent £2,700,000,000 The loans brought
profits for the banks and made rich elites richer. As always, hardly any
reached the poorest people.
But it is now the poor who are repaying the debt. Harsh economic poli-
cies, imposed at the insistence of the banks, have cut living standards -
already desperately low - by as much asa half. 150 million women, men
and children live in absolute poverty. Hunger and disease are increas-
ing. Nat West made £804M profits (before tax) in 1985. Only because
the poor kept paying.
