to Latin America. Barclays lent The loans brought prof-
its for the banks and made rich elites richer. As always, hardly any
reached the poorest people.
But it's now the poor who are repaying the debt. Harsh economic poli-
cies, imposed at the insistence of the banks, have cut living standards,
already desperately low, by as much as a half. 150 million women,
men and children live in absolute poverty. Hunger and disease are
increasing. Barclays made E854M profits (before tax) in 1985. Only
because the poor kept paying.
